Choosing a Version

Tableau Release Navigator

  • Understand what version of Tableau is right for your deployment
  • Filter and compare Desktop, Server, and Prep features by release
  • Perform impact analysis and plan change management for an upgrade with data on major new features and product changes delivered between your current and next versions.
  • Release Navigator is on Tableau Public - you can also download and customize it for your use cases.

Tableau Technical Support Release Pages

  • Known issues - what issues are we currently fixing?
  • Choose a recent maintenance release - whichever version (e.g. 2020.4, 2021.2) you are upgrading to, Tableau recommends installing the most recent maintenance release available for that version (e.g. the highest final decimal in 2020.4.4) to get the most recent product fixes.

Sharing workbook with others?
If you know what versions other viewers will use to open your workbook, you can use the Export As Version… option. This will let other users in your organization open and edit a workbook even when they aren't using the latest version of Tableau Desktop (down to Tableau 10.2).

You might receive an error when publishing your workbook. See this Knowledge Base article for more information.

Test it out first!
Take a look at the Known Issues and install the most recent version of Tableau Desktop to make sure everything works as expected.
  • You can install multiple versions of Tableau Desktop on the same computer. For example, if 2020.1 is the most recent version installed it will become the default.
  • Change your default back by following the instructions here: Upgrading Tableau Desktop.

Installing on a new computer?
You'll have to transfer your license from one computer to the other. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop and Move or Deactivate Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help.
